Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Woman with healthy smile

Dental insurance has a lot of similarities to standard health insurance, in that in exchange for a monthly premium, you gain access to fully and partially covered services. The big difference is that dental plans tend to focus more on preventive care. The idea is that by making routine services like checkups and cleanings easily affordable, a patient will be able to avoid most dental issues and take care of minor ones as early as possible, leading to better oral health and lower dental care costs.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Dental insurance plans can vary quite a bit when it comes to the services they cover and for how much, but in general, they tend to follow this basic framework:

  • Preventive services (checkups, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments) are covered 80-100%
  • Restorative services (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures) are covered 50-70%
  • Cosmetic services (cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening) are deemed elective, so they are NOT covered
  • Orthodontics usually receives a lifetime benefit, though this may only apply to metal braces for patients age 18 and under.
